If you’re traveling from the East Coast like I did, you’ll likely have a layover before reaching Tucson International Airport. My journey included a connection in Dallas, followed by a short flight to Tucson.

Travel Tip: Tucson’s airport is exceptionally visitor-friendly with clear signage and a designated area for rideshare services, hotel pickups, and taxi cabs located right across from the terminal.

Transportation options from the airport:

  • Taxi or Rideshare (Lyft, Uber): Quick and convenient at only 20-25 minutes, taking a car offers beautiful views of the desert landscape during your ride.
  • Bus: Takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach downtown Tucson
  • Rent a Car: Car rentals are plentiful and located near the airport, just follow the signs to the designated area.

Day 1: Exploring Downtown Tucson Arizona


Morning: Check-In and First Impressions

I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton at the convention center, which offers spacious rooms with mountain views, comfortable king-size beds, and all the amenities you’d expect from a quality hotel. The location is perfect for exploring downtown Tucson Arizona. Not only that, but I traveled to Tucson to attend a conference the the DoubleTree is conveniently connected to the convention center, so I was never late to a session!

Afternoon: Lunch and City Exploration

For lunch, I recommend trying authentic Mexican cuisine—one of the absolute must-try experiences when you visit Tucson. The city’s proximity to Mexico has influenced its incredible food scene.

Afterward, take some time to explore downtown:

  • Admire the street art and colorful murals throughout the city
  • Visit the historic Pima County Courthouse (filming location for the 1976 version of “A Star Is Born”)
  • Enjoy the mountain views that create a picturesque backdrop to the city

Tucson is known as one of the best stargazing cities in the United States due to its low light pollution. I highly recommend visiting the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, especially during their adult-friendly date nights.

At the planetarium, you can:

  • Experience “Tucson Sky and Beyond” presentations about planets and constellations
  • Visit the Undersea Discovery exhibit with interactive marine life displays
  • Explore numerous interactive exhibits that are fun for all ages

After stargazing, head to JoJo’s Restaurant and Monsoon Room Piano Bar for cocktails and delicious bites. Their planetarium-themed drinks, Jamón Pintxos, and brussels sprouts are must-tries, and their patio is absolutely stunning.

Evening: Experience Corbett’s and Premium Dining

For a fun evening experience, visit Corbett’s—a unique indoor-outdoor space where you can:

For dinner, I highly recommend Charro Steak, part of the El Charro establishment that’s been in Tucson Arizona since the 1920s. As one of the best Mexican restaurants in Tucson, their steaks are divine and top-rated in the area. I enjoyed their filet mignon, but they also offer delicious lobster dishes, southwest steak, trout, and enchiladas.
